As part of the 2025 Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival we joined the Youth Flat at Middlefield Hub to design a new mural to reflect all the things that make people happy at Middlefield hub!

For the last couple of years we have been working with Middlefield Community Project to develop a project that reflects the work they do in with local people. When the opportunity to work with the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival came up we knew it was the perfect opportunity for a mural that celebrates the positive impact the hub has on mental health.
We started with a design workshop at the Youth Flat. We received lots of ideas from the young people in the session about mental health. They focussed what they did to feel happy and positive at the hub. The suggestions included music, food, exercise, and friendship.

We incorporated their suggestions into the design, which became a celebration of the things that made you feel good at Middlefield Hub.
Next, we did a spray painting session. We had lots of interest and despite only a couple of hours practice we were able to practice some really difficult techniques.

We shared our sketches for the designs and got feedback from the participants. Everyone agreed that Middlefield Hub was the kind of place they went to when they needed to feel positive, supported, and with friends.
When it came to installing the mural we had lots of help.

Having practised at the spray painting session, we had a few helpers join us for the final paint, working on the letters, images, and background. We also had lots of positive encouragement from people in the community passing by who liked the work we were doing and were excited to see it finished.

We were all really proud of the finished result, celebrating how Middlefield Hub makes people feel positive and supported. Look out for the mural on Provost Rust Drive!
