Fish Quine: Ursula Kam-Ling Cheng for Tracing Torry

A vibrant joyful mural which explores the history of women working and living in Torry.

The artist joined a workshop with Touch of Love Young Achievers to design stickers and share what they have learned while working on their own Voices of Torry project.

From this workshop Ursula was inspired by the joy in all of the drawings and wanted to incorporate that in her design through the bright bold colours and graphic illustrations and iconography of fish, the lighthouse and fishing nets

Next, Ursula researched the women who worked in the area. She discovered the history of herring gutting, an intensive manual process done at speed. She read about women who travelled all over the UK following the herring boats. They even unionised to protect their working conditions.

These women became core to Ursula’s piece, represented by the Fish Quine, proudly holding up her work!

We are thankful to the King’s Community Foundation and The Bridge Centre for letting us paint this wall and include it in the trail.
