The Magical Isle of Torry

We spent some time exploring the magical Isle of Torry to create something special down at the Cruyff Court Neale Cooper. These murals are now part of the Tracing Torry Mural Trail.

Kirsty Lawie and Naomi Christie work together to create community inspired murals. They are both directors of Outlines Creative C.I.C., but their focus is always on socially engaged best practise. They have previously been commissioned by organisations including Spectra and RGU, and for this project worked with Denis Law Legacy Trust.

Kirsty and Naomi love working with Denis Law Legacy Trust because the young people who attend sessions with DLLT are always so empowered and confident when trying new things. Across a series of workshops and a number of years, Kirsty and Naomi met with different young people to develop ideas for four new murals on Kacey’s Legacy Youth Hub and the storage containers at Cruyff Court Neale Cooper.

Some of the sketches that inspired the final design:

Each workshop had the same prompt – What do you want someone who sees these murals to think or feel? There were two main answers that came through: we want to celebrate Torry and we want to welcome people to Streetsport.

In 2025 Kirsty and Naomi began with the murals on the shipping containers. The designs and installation were done with the DLLT Queens group, who practiced and developed their painting skills over a number of sessions. The group were very dedicated and paid close attention to detail.

When it came time to apply the new murals to Kacey’s Legacy Youth Hub, Kirsty and Naomi returned to a streetsport session to gather more input from young people. Two main themes came through – the word ‘streetsport’ to welcome visitors and new attendees, and a lot of depictions of Torry landmarks, from the lighthouse to the Torry Chip Bar. This sparked off an idea to develop ‘The Isle of Torry’, an imagined magical land where lots of the key Torry landmarks were charted using the words from the young people, from the Skiers to Vicky bridge, and everything in between.

We are thankful to Aimee Culley, Kelsey Seivwright and Mark Williams of Denis Law Legacy Trust for asking us to paint the hub and containers, and allowing us to include them in the trail.
